The Steam Donkey is clear!

Hi Shasta Mountain Bikers,
We held our first trail maintenance day on Sunday and cleared the Steam Donkey trail from top to bottom with a very small crew. A BIG THANKS goes out to Tom, Damon, Heather and Vinnie for being there. Damon even shrugged off car trouble at the meeting point to head on up to clear trail for nearly two hours. Now we've got a clear trail to ride. If you head out the ride the Steam Donkey (that's the trail off Old McCloud Road to the left just below Bear Springs) you'll find that there is one log near the top that you'll have to ride around to the left and one big log near the stream at the bottom that we left in place to build a ramp over.

Just to repeat the SET trail rides schedule:
Mondays, 5:30pm for cross country/climbers
Mondays, 6:30pm for downhillers/shuttle runs
Thursdays, 5:30pm for cross country/climbers
Thursdays, 6:30pm for downhillers/shuttle runs

The next group meeting is set for Thursday, July 17th at 6:30 pm at Shastice Park
near the maintenance building. We'll do group rides until then. After our success today, we're excited to have another trail maintenance day. Next on the priority list is the reroute of the fall line section on 8 mile. Jeff and Chad are work on sighting in a new line that would switchback and alleviate that deep rutted section. Depending on how soon they are able to mark a new route we'll either rally to start work on that new line or head over to the Bear Springs Trail for some serious manzanita removal. If any of you are so excited to clear another trail that you want to see a trail maintenance day happen say, next week, then send me back an email swearing your commitment and I'll try to get it organized.

Thanks again to a super trail maintenance crew!

Trail work starting!

Hey out there Shasta mountain bikers,
A group of 13 met Thursday evening (June 19th) to discuss group rides and trail maintenance. We talked about a number of trails and potential maintenance projects and prioritized two projects. We're getting started right away. First trail maintenance day: this Sunday, June 22nd on the Steam Donkey. We're meeting at 4pm at the bottom of the plantation on Old McCloud Road (just over the rise from the end of the residential area). We'll try to carpool up the the trailhead. We need all the help we can get. So if you've got a few hours free Sunday evening, come on up. Useful equipment to bring: loppers, handsaws, a pick, and/or a pry bar. Come dressed in pants, boots and bring gloves, as we've got a lot of debris to move. If we've got enough folks we'll start with one crew at the top and one at the bottom. It will be great to open up this trail again, as it's had a lot of trees fall on it over the past two winters. If you know you're going to make it, kick me back an email, please.

The second project is a reroute of the fall line section on 8 mile. Jeff and Chad will be looking at a new line, then we'll schedule a day to get started putting in the alternative route. The hope is that this will slow the major rutting and erosion that the fall line section sees. Look for an email regarding a work day on that section. If you've got specific ideas on the reroute, try to talk with Jeff at the Fifth Season (come to group ride to see him).

We finalized the meeting times for group rides:
Monday, 5:30pm for cross country/climbers
Monday, 6:30pm for downhillers/shuttle runs
Thursday, 5:30pm for cross country/climbers
Thursday, 6:30pm for downhillers/shuttle runs
– All group rides will meet at the Mt. Shasta High School gym parking lot.

We also talked about adding a group weekend ride after we've got a few trail maintenance weekends under our belts. Some folks are looking for morning rides during the week, so if you've got time for an early ride, email you're info to me or post it on the blog to get the word out.

We've already got some great info from the community of riders about area trails, and we're always looking for info about abandoned trails in need of maintenance. The word is the the local YCC crew is looking for summer projects, and while they can't build new trail, they can do trail maintenance. I plan on talking with the FS rep a bit more to find out what a YCC crew can do, so we can decide which trails to recommend for the degree of maintenance they are able to do.

I know it's summer, and everybody has fun things to do, but please keep in touch and stay involved - a concerted trail maintenance effort benefits all of us. So come out Sunday evening, and let's get started!

Great group rides

Shasta Bikers,
Kudos to everybody who came out for our first group rides last week!
A small turnout shuttled Red Fir on Wednesday, then on Thursday we had 15 riders, with a group pedaling up the Tunnel trail and a group shuttling from Sand Flat and 8 mile. Thanks to Jason Allen and Rick Poore for providing shuttle vehicles, even though they didn't ride. It was great to see you all there!

We're changing the format this coming week to see if it works out better. We'll ride on Monday and Thursday evenings, meeting at 6:30pm (so the shop techs can make it) at the MS high school parking lot. Make sure you come fully prepped - we had a flat tire on Thursday night (thankfully the rider had a kit).

We're working on putting together a trail maintenance effort to work on the Bear Springs Trail (also called the Old Steam Donkey Trail) so we can spread out to other trails. Our next meeting is Thursday, June 19th at 6:30pm at Shastice Park near the tennis courts. We'll talk about trail maintenance and share information at that time. We're also looking for info from any of the riders who have been around a long time who might remember trails that have been forgotten and neglected and need to be cleaned up. So ask around, and lets see if we can find some trails to restore.
We'd love to have some pics and video for the blog, so email it to me if you've got it.
We'll see you out there!
